Nepal Mahila Sangh (Nepal Women’s Association) is one of the oldest and most historic sister organizations of the Nepali Congress and has played a significant role in Nepal’s democratic movement, women’s rights movement, social transformation, and the struggle for political freedom. Established on 24 Shrawan 2004 B.S. (1947 A.D.) in Bhedasing, Kathmandu, under the leadership of its founding president Mangaladevi Singh, the organization emerged during a period when Nepal was under the Rana regime and women faced severe restrictions in education, political participation, social freedom, and access to basic rights. The founding of Nepal Mahila Sangh marked an important milestone in organizing women as a collective force for social and political change.
The organization’s roots can be traced to earlier efforts for women’s awakening and social reform. Women such as Divyadevi Koirala and others actively participated in social movements and the Biratnagar Jute Mill Movement of 2003 B.S., while women also contributed to the democratic struggle against the Rana regime. Nepal Mahila Sangh subsequently became an important platform for demanding women’s education, voting rights, political participation, equality, and social justice.
During the 2007 B.S. democratic revolution, women associated with the organization contributed to the movement through various forms of political and humanitarian support. Following the restoration of democracy, Nepal Mahila Sangh continued to advocate for women’s political representation and democratic values. Its contribution extended through the struggles against the Panchayat system, the 2042 B.S. civil disobedience movement, the 2046 B.S. People’s Movement, and the 2062/63 B.S. democratic movement.
Over the years, the organization has been strengthened through national conventions and successive leadership. Its leaders, including Mangaladevi Singh, Kanta Singh Manandhar, Meena Pandey, Uma Regmi, Ambika Basnet, Dr. Dila Sangroula, Usha Rawat Mishra, and Meena Kumari Kharel, have contributed to advancing its organizational and political mission.
Nepal Mahila Sangh remains committed to nationalism, democracy, socialism, equality, inclusion, women’s empowerment, and the rule of law. It continues to work toward ensuring meaningful and equal participation of women in political, social, economic, and state institutions and remains dedicated to building a more inclusive, just, democratic, and equitable Nepal.
